What is the importance of sanitizing medical accessories?

Whether you are working in a medical environment or not, it must come as no surprise to you that the sanitization of medical accessories is vital for all parties included, including doctors & patients alike. Medical environments are places where unhealthy pathogens, germs, & bacteria live & spread. Therefore, the appropriate protocol must be in place to disinfect medical equipment before & after use.

Importance of Sanitizing Medical Accessories

A medical device or medical-surgical equipment that comes in contact with a patient’s sterile tissue or mucous membranes & carries a significant threat of introducing pathogenic microbes, possibly resulting in infection.

Lack of proper sanitization & disinfection of medical accessories increases the risk of contamination because of the breach of host hindrances. Eliminating mucous, blood, pus, saliva, & foreign particles, or dust that’s left behind might result in dangerous complications for the subsequent patient needing surgery on whom the medical practician uses the equipment.

Key benefits of sanitizing medical accessories include:

  • Minimizing pathogenic load — several non-sterilized pathogens living on a surface.
  • Eliminates the breeding ground for living germs
  • Prevents the corrosion of expensive & highly precise equipment that have sophisticated functional pieces
  • Ensures the safe transportation of medical surgical equipment that needs to be packed & assembled for sanitization or disinfection.
  • With proper Sanitization & disinfection, you can ensure safe use of invasive & non-invasive medical devices.

Determining How Clean a Medical Equipment Needs to Be

The environment that the equipment is in, what the equipment will be used for, & what materials the equipment is made of all determine what degree of sanitization or disinfection is required.

All medical accessories must be pre-cleaned prior they can be sterilized or disinfected. Based on what the equipment comes into contact with determines the degree of sanitation required. There are 3 levels:

1-Critical Care Equipment

These medical equipment need Sterilization. Mostly, medical equipment is steamed in extreme heat to sterilize them, but there is also chemical sterilant used as low heat substitutes for equipment made with plastics. Most equipment that should be sterile for use can be bought sterile. After that, they should be sterilized before use on each inmate due to the high risk of bacteria exposure.

Equipment in this category includes anything that comes into contact with sterilized body tissues & fluids, such as the cardiovascular system or the internal organs. Well, this involves medical-surgical equipment, implants, & catheters.

2-Semi-Critical Equipment

These devices need high-Level disinfectant, which is any form of disinfection that destroys every living organism, apart from high levels of microbial spores. Generally, high-level disinfection is done using a chemical disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide, ortho-phthalaldehyde, Glutaraldehyde, or other chemicals approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). After high-level disinfection, equipment must be rinsed of all chemicals using sterilized water.

Something else to look at is the dwell time a chemical should be exposed to a surface to eliminate microbes. However, this is product-specific, & each disinfectant is tested for an esteemed dwell time mentioned on its container.

Semi-critical equipment is exposed to mucous linings (nose, esophagus, pharynx, etc.) or non-intact skin. Medical accessories in this category include respiratory therapy, anesthesia breathing circuits, & endoscopes.

3-Non-Critical Equipment

These accessories need a low-level disinfectant, which kills some viruses & pathogens with a chemical germicide logged as a hospital disinfectant by the EPA. Equipment in this category only needs cleaning when visibly soiled & regularly. Equipment should always be sanitized or disinfected after contact with a sick person who is on contact precautions.

This equipment might come into contact with untouched skin & therefore are lower risk than the equipment in the other categories. Non-critical equipment is divided into 2 categories:

  • patient care items like IV poles or blood pressure cuffs
  • environmental surfaces like computers, bedrails, & lab benches

What are the Risks of Improper Medical Equipment Sanitization?

The sanitization of the different medical accessories in the medical environment is crucial for the security of inmates, as failing to meet security criteria might have higher drastic consequences, which are as follows:

  • The Spread of Contagions: Anytime there are unidentified substances on medical equipment & medical surgical instruments, it might simply increase the risk of contagion by exposing particular body parts to germs.
  • The Spread of Diseases: In case medical equipment sanitization is not done properly after being utilized for a different task, it makes it really easy for diseases to spread from one inmate to another. For instance, it can spread HIV, AIDS, hepatitis, & sadly much more also.
  • Mortal Danger: While it might sound dramatic, infected medical accessories due to lack of appropriate steam sterilization is nothing to joke around. Serious infections might, in few cases, lead to the patient’s death.

Sanitizing medical devices is a crucial factor of today’s medical care as patients come in contact with syringes, surgical tools, & bandages all the time. To ensure the medical safety of the patients, medical practician & the environment, you must utilize medical accessories safely — this includes keeping them sanitized & clean.
